The U.S. Surgeon General recently declared a loneliness epidemic among Americans: since the COVID-19 pandemic, isolation has increasingly become the name of the game, whether it’s the rise in trends like “contact-free delivery” or even the sustained spike in workers doing their jobs remotely and avoiding the office altogether. Americans are more lonely than ever: is there anything we can do to provide instant companionship or at least a conversation?
One possible solution to a nation of individuals with no social outlet might be our newest and trending technological wonder: generative AI. These Chatbots, like ChatGPT or Bard, are wildly popular: a new study by aGamble found that 92% of Americans have used AI, and their conversational approach lends the feeling of social interaction, so much so that 1 in 7 have actually used this new technology to feel less lonely.
While many are using AI at work, particularly with help writing and other timesaving tasks, Americans are inviting AI fully into their personal lives as well. 46% have asked an AI chatbot for advice. While 1 in 10 has asked for romantic advice, others have even asked Artificial Intelligence to write love letters or poems for their beloveds. However, not everyone is being forthright as to the origins of their newfound sense of romance: 71% never told their significant other about using AI. Then again, not all the objects of affection are human, either: a recent study found that 44% of gamers have a crush on a character!
Others have used AI to help answer questions, conduct research, and write more quickly in their personal lives and in the workplace. Of the 1 in 3 workers who use AI, they say AI has completely changed how they do their job. Most use it to save time, and many also use it for writing, research, emails, and even workplace advice. Yet there’s concern, as well: 61% feel that Artificial Intelligence will lead to layoffs.
People’s wallets aren’t immune, either: 45% would let AI help them make financial decisions, and 1 in 4 would use AI to help them gamble– a task which grows ever easier with gambling available via phone apps. A recent study found that 31% of Americans have made a sports bet on their phones– throw ChatGPT into the mix, and gambling could be a different game altogether. Especially with less accessible in-person betting like horse racing, phone-based betting is growing more popular. AI can be a game-changer!!
But how many Americans actually understand how AI works? According to the study, about 1 in 5 actually understand Artificial Intelligence and a little over half (54%) are able to spot AI-generated content. Common sense and recognizing repetitive errors are the leading ways that people are able to detect AI.

Overall, just under half of Americans think the world is a better place with Artificial Intelligence. Many cite its positive qualities like research capability and fast response time, while the more pessimistic among us see its potential to precipitate layoffs and plagiarize other work. Only time will tell whether this new tech ultimately hurts or hinders humanity!
