7 Must-Haves in Your Closet

If you’re like most women, you spend an incredible amount of time shopping for clothes, shoes, and accessories. And then you spend even more time coordinating your looks. Yet somehow, you always end up with nothing to wear.

A few months ago, I stood outside my closet staring in, shocked at the enormous collection I had amassed. But the worst part was I only wore about one-fourth of this ridiculously overgrown wardrobe. I needed a solution to simplify my choices, save some money, and ease my guilt. So, I donated everything I hadn’t worn in the season and came to a realization: I really only need a few exceptional items that I love instead of a closet full of stuff I don’t wear. After some more thought, I came up with 8 ‘must-haves.’ With these select items in your closet, anyone can knock ’em dead every single day.

1. Statement boots and sandals

If you own a pair of versatile, gorgeous statement boots and sandals, you might as well have a pot of gold. First off, statement shoes are ones that—you guessed it—make a statement and are the stand-out element of your outfit. I would rather pay a hefty price for a nice pair of booties or sandals that I love and will wear all the time than buy a bargain pair that are so-so and sit in the closet most of the season.

Here’s the secret—don’t be afraid to spend the money on one really fantastic pair of shoes for each season that is comfortable and makes you feel sexy and confident. You can afford the more expensive ones you want when you aren’t buying so many other pairs. However, you will need other shoes. Just don’t go overboard. Buy with intention and only get essentials that you love.

2. A really great fitting pair of jeans

These days, jeans are slacks from past generations. Women wear jeans more and more these days, dressing them up with cute boutique blouses and statement shoes. Or dress them down with sweatshirts and tees. Either way, a great-fitting pair of jeans will serve you well.

The problem is finding the right pair for you that feels sensational and flatters your body. Buying jeans can be a challenge at any age. Once you find the pair, pay the extra for fit and quality because you really can’t put a price on owning a pair of jeans that make you feel like a million bucks. Again, one great fitting pair is better than half a dozen pairs that all have some issue that makes you cringe when you put them on: too tight, too long, too roomy, whatever! Ditch the excess and go for the gold standard.

3. Black pants

I don’t care who you are and what you do for a living. You have some use for basic, great-fitting black pants because they are as versatile as jeans with dressier tops or more casual ones. Just be mindful that leggings are not pants. Some people might disagree, but most women can’t pull off that look unless they are going to the gym.

eggings, a hybrid between jeans and leggings, have become more and more popular. They fit like leggings but look like pants or jeans.  People who love the feel of yoga pants will adore jeggings because they look and feel great, which is the whole point.

4. A go-to jacket

Layering is a tried and true fashion trend that’s been around for a long time because it makes for stellar looks. Having a go-to jacket as part of your top 7 exponentially increases your mix-and-match flexibility. One of my favorite looks is a t-shirt with a cool saying on the front and a colored canvas jacket.

Having more than one jacket is probably a must because you need more than a one-dimensional style. Some great jacket looks include a lightweight faux black leather jacket, a jean jacket, and animal prints.  The point is this—a great jacket is fashionable and functional. And don’t forget to buy one that fits well and flatters your body with the right length. You really can’t go wrong with this go-to essential in your closet.

5. Cool, trendy t-shirts

There are so many great t-shirt looks out there. A really popular one right now is distressed fabric. It may look like it’s been through hell, but it has a unique vibe and a feel like no other.

However, if you don’t like the distressed look, t’s with clever sayings are also quite popular. But even if this style is not your thing, you can’t go wrong with a plain t-shirt for a comfortable and versatile look. Find one that fits your style, and you can wear it with jeans or black pants—put a jacket over the top, and you have a comfortable and stylish look.

6. A boutique blouse

Boutiques are great places to shop because they have fashions you don’t see mass-produced all over the place. Instead, boutiques have hand-selected pieces from smaller vendors, but the quality is usually quite impressive.

As far as price goes, it just depends. But many boutiques will surprise you with reasonable prices. Having a stellar blouse in your arsenal of clothing gives you something to dress up those jeans to go out. You can also wear a great-looking blouse with black pants to work or a dressier function.

7. T-shirt dress or other casual dress

T-shirt dresses are comfortable and usually flattering on most body types as long as you get one that fits. Some are cut boxier, and others have a tapered or more tailored design. Find the t-shirt dress that fits your body and style, and you have another super versatile piece in your wardrobe.

Wear it with flats or sandals in the summer. Put it on with a jacket, tights, and booties in the fall. And the best aspect might be it’s casual, but it’s also a dress, so you can get by with wearing it to more formal functions if you choose the right shoes and accessories.

There you have it

Style is a personal aspect, and everyone is different. However, women of all ages can stay fashionable with just a few staples in their closets. If you own the right pieces, you don’t need a million options. All you really need are a few phenomenal items that fit and make you feel like a million bucks. So, ditch the ‘closet filler’ and stick to only a few classic pieces you love. You won’t be sorry.
