A Review of Mayne’s If It Comes

There is something transcendent and ethereal about music. Scientists believe that music has healing and therapeutic properties. You can use music to boost your feel-good hormones, reduce your anxiety and decrease the perception of the amount of pain you are going through.

Music is also one of the only things in life that can break barriers that generally divide us as human beings. It is able to go beyond age, race, and sometimes even political views. This forms one of the main philosophies of Mayne’s music; he believes that music comes from the soul and can be used to influence the way we live for the better.

Mayne is an alternative rap artist based in Maryland. Born Jamel Swain in Mississippi, Mayne grew up in a single-parent household. This was a tough time for him, but he was determined to get through. He later joined the Marine Corps but ultimately decided to pursue a career in music.

Mayne has taken the opposite direction in a genre that is more often associated with violence and the pursuit of riches. His message is targeted at the higher consciousness, and his goal is to create music with meaning. He draws inspiration from the alternative rock because of its poetry, which he heavily uses in his songs.

Mayne released If It Comes on 25 August through his banner, 3rd Eye Logic (3EL). If It Comes is a rap song with some R&B, blues, and funk infusion. The song talks about having a sense of agility; it is about growing our ability to handle anything “if it comes.” According to Mayne, once you do this, you allow yourself to move through life more freely.

The song opens with a guitar melody that runs throughout the song. It has an R&B feel that is calming and prompts you to take a deep breath and go along with him. The bass and the drums aren’t too loud and act as a good complement to the guitar.

Mayne uses a half-sung half-rap style for his delivery. His voice has a smoothness and easiness, making the song feel effortless. His rhythm is sometimes on the beat, sometimes offbeat, giving the song some more character and feel.

Apply the pressure hard, easy come, easy go.” Mayne starts with a sort of a taunt to the universe. It’s as if he is saying he is ready for whatever comes his way, no matter how hard the pressure is. He also reminds us that anything worth having will probably be challenging to get. If it comes easy, it will leave the same way.

The rest of the lyrics address issues that may stop you from accepting the realities of life. One of them is when he touches on a bit of flattery when he says, “Hate breed on this level…What you like is what they tell you, I ain’t got that problem.”

If It Comes is as enjoyable as it is meditative. In his words, “Life is a journey as beautiful as a single leaf as it breezes by.”

Mayne has upcoming appearances in Los Angeles, New York, and Texas. Details on the tours can be found by following him on his socials or visiting his website
