Tell us about the founder. What is their background?
In 2015, Sean O’Neill, founder of Toast! Supplements were surprisingly diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver. Cirrhosis of the liver is often associated with heavy drinking, so for a young 20-year-old who only drank socially to be diagnosed with such a disease was shocking.
After months of frustrating visits with the doctor, Sean looked to research to help explain the diagnosis. He quickly found a wealth of clinical research showing how natural substances like green tea and milk thistle could help keep an alcohol drinker healthy…some like prickly pear even appeared to help reduce or prevent hangovers the following day. After more doctor visits, they soon found the diagnosis to be wrong, but that didn’t stop Sean from thinking about the research he had discovered.
Soon Sean started his MBA program and found many international classmates who mentioned products they took in their home countries prior to going out and drinking with friends. This led him to recall the research he had discovered and wanted to test something out for himself. Putting together a mix of ingredients and asking friends to take it prior to drinking, Sean discovered a formula that worked for helping his classmates feel better after a night of drinking. From the earliest tests, his mix was working, but the delivery was not there yet! People did not like taking pills, powders, or strange-tasting drinks. It was at this time that Sean experimented with mixing his formula in Jello. People ate them right up before he could even explain to them what they were consuming! That was the day Toast! and the Before You Drink Gummy was born.
After successfully finishing my MBA program, Sean partnered with Dr. Joris Verster, the leading authority on alcohol hangover and the researcher behind many of the studies he referenced while formulating his gummies to create Toast!. The pair worked together to perfect the formula and then partnered with an American candymaker to develop the delicious gummy bear you see today.
How did they come up with the idea?
The idea was sparked by a wrong diagnosis that lead to researching the effects of alcohol on the body. His research sparked creativity and curiosity to help people have fun while supporting their health.
