What problem does the Coalatree solve?
Since the inception of Coalatree in 2010, our mission has been to create durable, fashionable, and versatile apparel and accessories that function optimally from the mountains to the city. Since the beginning, our mission has been to create these products using the most sustainable inputs and production methods possible. Throughout the last 11 years, Coalatree has stayed true to these values and continues to innovate as new production methods and increasingly eco-friendly inputs become available.
Our products allow our customers to support a brand that produces products in a sustainable fashion, supports giveback initiatives, and aims to not contribute to fast fashion in any way whatsoever. The products themselves are versatile, durable, and made to withstand the test of time. The idea of our #MTN2CTY motto is that we build products that function just as well as an exclusively outdoor-focused products company would, while incorporating stylistic components that allow them to be worn and enjoyed in an urban setting.
Tell us about the founder. What is their background?
Prior to 2010, our founder, Charlie Bessey was one of the original team members at a brand named Skullcandy. During that time, Charlie worked closely in multiple roles throughout the business wherein he became blatantly aware of the excess amounts of plastic that was being wasted in the production, and packaging processes. Eventually finding and excelled at his role within the marketing department, and worked closely with Skullcandy ambassadors and athletes to create what still to this day is known as Skullcandy TV, he also realized how big of an influence fast food companies had in terms of sponsorship within the action sports industry.
At this time, a clear movement was starting to reemerge surrounding organic farming and sustainability and he wanted to help translate that movement into a clothing brand that catered to the idea that not only what you put in your body is important, but what you put on your body is important.
– Shortly thereafter, Coalatree was born on an organic farm in Colorado and launched its first line with products made out of inputs such as organic cotton, recycled x-ray film, recycled lunch trays, and recycled glass bottles.
Sustainable Products Coalatree was an early adopter on the sustainability front and sought to only work with factories on the cutting edge of sustainability that paid their employees fair wages. At that time, there were two main manufacturers that prioritized sustainability in their supply chains. Fast forward to 12 years later and the brand has continually sought to incorporate more sustainable inputs into our production methods
How did they come up with the idea?
– See above.
How can this transform the world or our day-to-day lives?
One of the many things that have been learned over the years is that people WANT to buy sustainable products, but people BUY great products. We strive to make our products perform and function as well as outdoor-specific brands products would while still placing enough emphasis on style and fashion so that they can be thoroughly loved and enjoyed in the urban setting. Exceeding expectations with product quality is what we are all about. Over time, we have become better at communicating this philosophy to our customers.
It is important that consumers speak with their dollars and support causes that are meaningful to them and support brands that are taking steps in what they deem to be the ‘Right” direction.
Consumers have more sway than they realize – support brands that are making meaningful progress on issues that matter to you.
What do customers love most about the product?
The versatility and ability to use all of our products in a variety of settings. The quality of our products and the fact that they are built to last. The causes that they are supporting on a local and global scale by spending their money on our products.
