What is a dental implant?

The term dental implant refers to a fixed prosthesis that is inserted into the maxilla or mandible by means of an artificial tooth root. One or more artificial teeth are then placed on the artificial root.

The aim of the dental implant is to ensure that the space in which one or more teeth were missing, even after extraction, is finally covered. The space to be covered can affect both the upper and lower arches. The placement of a dental implant should be regarded as a genuine surgical operation.

When an artificial implant achieves a functional union with bone, this is called osseointegration . And this is precisely what happens with the endosseous screw of a dental implant. It should be pointed out, however, that complete osseointegration is not possible if the bone tissue and gums of the maxilla or mandible are not in a healthy state. What are dental implants made of?

Dental implants, made of metallic material, are composed of three elements:

●   endosseous screw , which has the same function as the root of the fallen tooth

●   abutment , the connection point between screw and prosthesis

●   a dental prosthesis , made of different materials, is used to replace the lost tooth.

How are dental implants placed?

Prior to surgery, the dentist performs a thorough assessment of the patient’s oral condition. Factors such as the quantity and quality of bone in the area where the implant will be placed, and the presence of any infections or oral pathologies that could compromise the success of the operation are analyzed.

The stages of the operation are as follows :

●   anaesthesia: prior to surgery, a local anaesthetic is administered to the affected area to avoid any pain during the operation

●   incision: when the gum is cut, the dentist exposes the underlying bone on which the endosseous screw will be positioned

●   implant positioning: the dentist makes a cavity in the bone, into which the endosseous screw will be inserted

●   closing the incision: once the dental implant has been inserted, the dentist sutures the gum to the screw

●   healing: may take 3 to 6 months to allow time for the endosseous screw to integrate into the bone

●   Osseointegration: during this process, the patient’s bone grows around the implant, forming a strong, stable connection.

The actual placement of the dental implant takes place immediately or a few months after insertion of the endosseous screw.

When can’t I have a dental implant?

The limit to the insertion of a dental implant may be represented by the state of the bone, which in its absence or in less than optimal conditions, could jeopardize the success of the operation. In such cases, it is often advisable to use a removable prosthesis instead of a fixed prosthesis.

However, it is advisable for every patient to be able to consult a trusted dentist in order to better understand his or her situation and, consequently, the range of possibilities open to him or her.

How much does a full dental implant cost?

The price of dental implants in Istanbul Turkey can generally be more affordable than in many other countries. On average, you can expect to pay between 500 and 1,000 euros per dental implant. However, exact prices can vary depending on a number of factors, including the clinic chosen, the quality of the materials used and the specific treatment required. It’s always advisable to consult several clinics and compare quotes before making a decision.

The success or failure of an implant depends on :

●   the patient’s state of health

●   the use of medication, which may or may not have an impact on osseointegration

●   the condition of the tissues in the mouth

Over time, the implant may undergo mechanical stress due to mastication, which is why it is necessary to plan the position and number of implants correctly in order to safeguard the condition of the prosthesis for a long time to come.

The prerequisite for the success of a dental implant is certainly the patient’s excellent dental health: bone and gum health cannot be ignored.
