Why is this subject, “The Others,” important in the world?
I can’t think of a single issue that is more important to the world than the emergence of extremism in politics and how it contributes to the polarization of people. It’s such an intractable problem that the only way to solve it is to put it into the confines of urban fantasy, where you can use magic to be victorious.
What is the pressing issue right now, and how are you addressing it?
Gosh, no pressure… I’m not sure if others would see this as a pressing need, but I’m focused on my family, my friends – my circle of people – and making sure I’m present, connected, and doing the best job I can. I’ve been married for 29 years, and my spouse is also a professional with a demanding life. I have a daughter who is a sophomore in college, which is a time of significant growth but also stress, and I’m determined to help her navigate becoming an adult. I’ve got dozens of clients who rely on me and my consulting firm, employees who need a paycheck every month, and then, last but not least, my writing. Being present in your life and the lives of others takes a lot of focus and commitment. I guess for me, the pressure is to do that. I want to show up authentically and connect with the people I know, love, and work with.
Evette Davis Biography
What is your background in this subject?
I have a good handle on politics, media, and current events. I’ve run a public affairs firm for twenty-five years in San Francisco, working with elected officials, major companies, and the media. Prior to that, I worked as a newspaper reporter and served as press secretary to a member of Congress.
What is something that most people don’t know about you?
I hate canned tuna fish and mayonnaise. My sister used to chase me around the house with an open can of Star-Kist, and I’m scarred to this day.
What are your passions outside of your career?
Beyond writing, I love food and wine, travel, and being outside.
The Others
Tell me about your book
The Others is the first book in a trilogy about a secret society of witches, vampires, and other magical beings called the Council. The Council uses its magic to fix the outcomes of elections and other world events to thwart fascism. The heroine is a San Francisco-based political consultant drawn into the Council’s work and later learns she is related to its leader and a witch. Her best friend is a fairy and the City Librarian.
Where can people buy the book?
The Others will be available on September 17, 2024, everywhere books are sold and in public libraries.
Are there any social causes that you believe in and support?
Women’s reproductive health. We’re going backward in time at an alarming rate. I’m also a major booster of public libraries, which are essential to any community. Equal access to books and information is so important for a civil society.
What is next for you?
There are three books in the trilogy. The next one, The Gift, comes out in April 2025. I’m currently working on a second draft of the third book, The Campaign, which features a national election to put a woman in the White House – something that obviously requires magic to be set into motion. Beyond that, I am contemplating trying my hand at romance novels set in Sun Valley, Idaho, where I have a second home.
