Exclusive Interview: Rising Artist Mary K

Mary K

What first got you into music?

Mary K: It all started when I was very young. I remember loving music so much that I would rewrite the songs that I loved and would rearrange their melodies. I didn’t know why I would always feel the urge to do it, but then I found out that I had songwriting and singing talent.

Poetry was also very inspirational to me and helped me develop as a songwriter. I remember reading my Father’s poetry books as a kid and turning the poetries into songs.

Who inspired you to make music?

Mary K: I know every great singer and writer I was exposed to, from American, African, European, and Latin. But if you ask me what style of music captures me the most, I’d say Rnb. I’m inspired by many great R&b musicians like Mary J Blige, Jazmine Sullivan, Alicia Keys, and many more.

How would you describe the music that you typically create?

Mary K: I’m a versatile and very international Artist. Though I love singing Rnb, I sing other styles too, and because I am a polyglot, I sing in different languages such as English, Portuguese, and Spanish, and I’m planning on singing in Czech too since I am also fluent in it.

My music is mostly about love and everyday life.

As a songwriter, I get inspired by the beauty and by the ugly things.

For example, when I write about love, I don’t always glamorize it. I also like exploring the drama and the pain that comes with it.

Music, to me, is an expression tool. Growing up as a diplomat’s daughter, there was a certain protocol that needed to be followed within the household. For example, screaming or fighting was not allowed, using certain expressions was also not allowed, and all interactions had to be handled diplomatically. Music was my way out. I used it, and still use it to express myself.

Who would you like to collaborate with the most?

Mary K: I would love to collaborate with the Queen of Rnb, Ms. Mary K Blige, not only because I love her work but also because she gave some of the best songs to the world. She is literally some of the greatest musicians that have ever existed.

If you could go open a show for any artist, who would it be?

Mary K: There are many Artists who I would love to open for. I love singing, and if there’s a chance for me to do an opening, I will do it. I opened for a few Artists and groups throughout my career, and one of the most memorable moments was when I opened for the Rapper Eve years ago in Namibia.

What is one message you would give to your fans?

Mary K: I would tell them never to give up on their dreams, no matter what.

How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?

Mary K: The internet is now the most powerful tool for Musicians right now. I mean, the opportunities that it gives are limitless.

Nowadays, it is very easy to get exposure and to make money as an artist on the internet.

Many Artists will have amazing careers thanks to it.

Which famous musicians do you admire?

Mary K: As I mentioned, I admire musicians like Mary J Blige, and Jazmine Sullivan, I also admire many African musicians like Fally Ipupa, Wizkid, Burna Boy, Tecno, and, I also admire a few Angolan and Latin musicians.

What is the best advice you’ve been given?

Mary K: I was told not to keep striving and never to give up.

If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?

Mary K: I am a juror at one of the music grant companies here in Canada. Usually, I come across many extremely talented musicians’ applications, and many of them are disqualified for not including a website in their applications as part of the requirements, for example.

I would change that. I mean, talented musicians deserve a chance, always.

What’s next for you?

Mary K: At the moment, I am preparing my next album, which is due to be released this year, I’m loving the process, and I believe the world will love the final product.

I recently released a song that will be included in the album, it is called Mr. Criminal, which is a very interesting song, it is out on many platforms including Spotify, Apple tunes, Tiktok, Facebook, and Instagram.
