Tell us about the founder. What is their background?
My name is Susan Murat and I have been an import analyst for customs brokers, a pastry chef, a professional fundraiser, a holistic bodyworker, and a realtor. Through it, all, my interest and use of herbs and plants as medicine have never wavered. I was born here in San Pedro, CA to Croatian parents and was especially close to my father, Joe.
How did they come up with the idea?
The idea to create Fiji Joe Turmeric evolved over a period of about six years. I love to travel and brought back turmeric from the places where it grew even years before I visited Fiji. This included Belize, Peru, Costa Rica, St. Lucia, and Hawaii. I began to test samples of these roots, initially for my own curiosity. This is how I learned that, although turmeric CAN grow in areas where the conditions are not ideal, it grows best where they are ideal such as Fiji. I had never been to the South Pacific but went in 2014 on two days’ notice to see a friend that was traveling there. My first thought upon exiting the airplane was, “I bet there’s some great turmeric here”. I had some time before my connecting flight in Nadi, so I asked a local if he could find some roots for me. They were fantastic! A few more trips and several more test results on Fijian turmeric convinced me that the world needs to know about this. We faced many challenges along the way, but that is another story! Once the decision was made to get this beautiful turmeric out there, naming the company was a no-brainer! Fiji Joe Turmeric is named after my father Joe Murat who passed away in 2011. Through them, I received an education and made great friends. At the top of this list is my processor/partner Joe Taoi who lives in Suva.
How can this transform the world or our day-to-day lives?
Ingesting turmeric on a daily basis helps to prevent a multitude of ailments and conditions without the side effects of prescription medications. Medical research validates this on a regular basis, and my passion for turmeric is reignited with all that we continue to learn about it. More than ever, physicians are recommending turmeric to their patients. As stated above, it cleans the blood and liver and reduces inflammation substantially – these benefits alone lower the risk of illness. Regular turmeric intake strengthens our immune systems substantially as well. There is evidence that turmeric has been used as medicine for over 4500 years, and I am glad the world is re-discovering how beneficial it is for us.

Fiji Joe chooses not to because black pepper is irritating and hard to digest for those with pre-existing gastrointestinal issues.
