Many brands are created out of frustration from not having a product and/or service that serves or performs to our desired goals. One of those brands is Florae, founded by Dr. Natalie King, Ph.D., whose background is rooted in Bio-physiology and Neuroscience “wanted to create a company that reflected her multifaceted identity, combining the scientific rigor of her medical work and her hair journey as an Afro-Latina woman with textured hair.”
Dr. King knew that many people likely experienced the same struggles with their hair, and this knowledge, coupled with the success of her home-grown textured hair care solutions, inspired her to launch a hair wellness company. Florae believes that hair wellness is not one-size-fits-all and that there is an intricate science behind a healthy scalp and each strand of hair.
What does Florae mean?
All the plant life of a given place or time. Taken from the many plant extracts and vegan clean ingredients, the products comprise. Florae believes in #CleanerThanClean.
What inspired the creation of Florae?
While asked about the inspiration behind Florae, Dr. Natalie King shared her struggles with her unique curls. As a healthcare provider, model, and brand spokesperson, she is always aware of how her hair impacts her daily life; she started to experiment in her kitchen to find reliable solutions. With her background as a Neuroscientist, Dr. King is keenly aware of how something as simple as our hair and how we feel about its appearance and health can affect our confidence. She’s experienced this over the years of working on her healthy hair journey.
What are Florae defrientiators?
Florae is driven to challenge the status quo by introducing a holistic approach to textured hair treatment and care to the hair wellness industry. A significant factor that makes the upcoming brand stand out is its focus on the person’s total health when assessing hair issues to position the appropriate hair product solutions. While all types and textures can find value in our products, at our core, a key demographic is a woman who has a textured curl pattern, someone like myself who represents Latina and Caribbean heritage.
What are some common misconceptions about women with textured hair?
‘Healthy hair is a lifestyle;’ we want that to be reflected in our overall strategy for hair wellness. Issues with nutrition, thyroid function, immune system dysfunction, and others all play a role in our total wellness and can ultimately play out in a woman’s hair health. At Florae, we aim to bridge that gap in access to information and experts.”
What’s a major problem that you see in current brands that target textured hair?
One billion people worldwide have textured hair. While textured hair is uniquely beautiful, the main concern is the lack of natural and compelling brands that cater to this market more cleanly. The ingredients aren’t often the cleanest and can have long-lasting effects.
