Healthy Hippo Goes Carbon Neutral

Over the past few years, many industries, including the food and beverage sector, have faced increasing pressures to address and limit their carbon emissions for the sake of the environment. Although the biggest producer continues to be the transportation sector, sitting at 27% of all greenhouse gas emissions in 2020, these other industries are not far behind. Due to these pressures and, of course, wanting to safeguard our natural environment for future generations, many of these players have begun to take notice and make changes. For example, several large food and beverage companies have announced their dedication to going carbon neutral in the last few years, including Maple Leaf Foods, Yorkshire Tea, and Bread Alone. And the rest of the industry is slowly beginning to follow suit. Hippo

Healthy Hippo Receives Carbon Neutral Certification 

Healthy Hippo is low-sugar, 100% plant-based candy with no sugar alcohols, preservatives, flavorings, or colorants. Before it became the widely successful brand it is today, Healthy Hippo’s CEO, Ashley Paterson, was simply determined to create a better-for-you candy without compromising on taste. 

Beyond their commitment to creating a healthy alternative to traditional candy for their consumers, they have also recently received a Carbon Neutral Certification from Planet FWD, one of the leading carbon management platforms. This achievement makes Healthy Hippo the first low sugar candy brand in North America to receive this certification and marks its commitment to sustainability and the health of our environment. 

“The time for climate action is now, and the consumer demand for climate-friendly products is clear,” said Julia Collins, the founder, and CEO of Planet FWD. “We’re honored to work with Healthy Hippo to deliver for their customers and drive meaningful impact through emissions reductions and neutralization.” 

Healthy Hippo worked with Planet FWD to measure, reduce, and neutralize its carbon footprint through every phase of the production process. In order to neutralize the unavoidable emissions, Healthy Hippo has purchased carbon offsets, in line with Planet FWD’s standards, that provide afforestation and reforestation-based carbon credit projects. Upon making both these changes within the organization, Healthy Hippo was granted its Carbon Neutral Certification. 

What’s Next for Healthy Hippo?

Healthy Hippo’s CEO, Ashley Paterson, remarked, “Carbon neutrality is just the first step on our sustainability journey. We will continue to work closely with Planet FWD for additional climate actions we can take to continue to reduce our carbon footprint. We’ve planned out specific steps that are verifiable and time-bound, including reducing emissions from energy use, materials, and transportation. Because, when it comes down to it, we need to do more for our planet and the next generation.”

And the most recent IPCC report makes it even more clear that there’s no time to waste in the fight against climate change. The latest report, released in April 2022, states that the window to prevent global temperatures from rising by more than 1.5°C above pre-industrial averages is rapidly closing. Not only that, but the decisions made this year could determine whether or not that target is met. 

Ultimately, that’s why consumers are looking to brands such as Healthy Hippo to begin implementing environmentally conscious protocols and go carbon neutral in an effort to safeguard the future of our environment. Healthy Hippo’s initiative of going carbon neutral serves as an example to other companies in the food and beverage sector that they also need to limit and neutralize their carbon emissions so that future generations can enjoy a thriving and sustainable planet.
