When you’re trying to grow your brand and impress a customer, it doesn’t matter whether you’re in the checkout aisle of a grocery store or sitting in the lobby of a fancy hotel. You never know whose eye you’re going to catch, so it’s important to always look good no matter where you are and dress for success.
How you dress is often the first impression that people have of you. Whether you like it or not, it is a critical component of your image, reputation, and personal brand. If your goal is to connect with affluent clients, the way you dress becomes even more important because they are used to seeing other people dressed well. Think about it—have you ever strolled into a high-end store and seen employees wearing baggy jeans and t-shirt’s? No, you see well-dressed people wearing designer clothing who look like they could afford to purchase whatever they wish. The way they are dressed is not a coincidence. It’s a conscious decision made by those stores in order to attract the type of clientele who will spend money there. This rule also applies to you: if you dress well, you will attract clients who can afford your image.
When meeting new clients, you want to be certain that you’re portraying an image that will be immediately accepted and trusted by them. Clients don’t want an advisor that looks like they just woke up. Instead, they want someone who looks professional and put together.
In addition to creating a quality impression on others, dressing well also plays a role in your own self-confidence. Think about how you feel when you know you look good. Your confidence is sky-high and affects the way you behave and carry yourself, something that clients can clearly see. In turn this gives them the assurance that you know what you are doing and that you can be trusted. I personally know this works because when I started dressing well, I noticed that more people paid attention to me and high-value clients began to trust me more.
However, it can be argued that some of the richest people in the world get by with polo shirts and cargo pants. But if you look at things as a whole, the casual billionaire is the minority within the wealthy community. The richest people in the world have become so successful that they are simply recognized by their faces wherever they go. On the other hand, most millionaires are not recognized by everyone they meet. It is often the way they look and carry themselves that portrays that fact that they are indeed successful and worth getting to know.
So all in all, why should you dress for success? It’s really quite simple. When you look good, you feel good. And when you feel good, you do good work. The better your work is, the more business you’re likely to get. While your outfit might not be the key to your success, it can be a big factor if you let it be.
