If you have a presence on the internet, chances are you think about how to rank higher on Google’s search engine results pages. You know your clients are out there and one of the ways you are relying on them finding you is by developing and executing an SEO strategy.
But your clients aren’t the only audience you should be considering as you build an SEO strategy. Google’s algorithm is your second, and no less important, audience. In fact, the algorithm might be more important than your customers when you are building your SEO strategy because if you embark on SEO strategies that are designed to manipulate search results you will be penalized.
Avoid a Google penalty by creating useful, engaging content
When ranking your website in its results, Google looks for a plethora of things to give it information on where your site should sit. It measures your website’s usability and on-page SEO and one of the most important things Google looks for is a business’ relevance and authority.
You can build your business’ website’s relevance and authority in a variety of ways – like link building but more on that later. One of the simplest ways to build authority on your website is to create engaging and useful content for your audience.
Make sure your website gives your customers the information that they are looking for in easy to read and understand language. If you are targeting an audience from a country different to yours, make sure your content has been written by a native in the local language.
Although the algorithm’s tolerance for AI generated content is improving, it currently still penalizes spammy AI-generated content so to avoid Google penalties, your content should always be created by a human.
Keywords are important but not to the detriment of your content and your audience’s engagement – the algorithm will penalize your website if your content is stuffed with keywords to try and increase your ranking in search results.

Play the long game to avoid a Google penalty
Google’s algorithm is constantly evolving to provide its users with the best results possible each time they search. A considered SEO strategy takes time to develop and implement and while you are likely to see results immediately, it is also about playing the long game and investing in building strategies with longevity.
Backlinking is a good example of an SEO strategy that can be done quickly and cheaply. You can find spammy websites to backlink to you, using poorly written content, but Google’s algorithm was recently updated to address this practice. If you adopt a quick and dirty backlinking strategy you will see quick results but eventually, the algorithm will find you and it will take a long time to regain credibility in search results.
