How To Win In Modern Wellness With Retired Firefighter, Paramedic, CEO, Sam Tejada

How To Win In Modern Wellness

Why is this subject, “How To Win In Modern Wellness,” important in the world?

Simply put, “health is wealth.” Health and wellness are really our most valuable assets as individuals and as nations. Covid certainly proved that. And now, people don’t want to just manage sickness. Of course, there is a need for reactive sick care, but the pursuit today is about achieving optimal health. Prevention is key. So you don’t get sick.  A proactive, preventative approach to health allows people to live a better quality of life and even potentially avoid future chronic illnesses. Right now, here in the United States, specifically, diseases like obesity and hypertension are at an all-time high.

What is the pressing issue right now, and how are you addressing it?

I would say that increasing awareness and getting the message out about all of the preventative measures that people can take to live better, fuller, healthier, and happier lives is the main thing the modern wellness industry needs to address. We’ve barely scratched the surface and need a lot more preventative wellness companies, like Liquivida, to reach more people and help them take control of their health, understand their bodies, and uncover personalized approaches to their wellness tailored to their specific needs. Within Liquivda, we address it by focusing on educating people through what we call The Vida Journey, touching on multiple aspects of overall preventative health and wellness, from weight loss and HRT to sexual health and medical aesthetics. It’s a comprehensive approach that I like to call “Looking under the hood.”

Sam Tejada Biography

What is your background in this subject?

I feel like the subject of health and wellness has been a part of my DNA since I was an adolescent. At age 14, I was a certified, working lifeguard and, by 19, had started my first business, Rescue 101, providing American Red Cross training courses for others to become certified lifeguards. My ultimate goal was to become a firefighter/paramedic, which I did proudly for 12 years for the City of Oakland Park. Shift work at the fire department, with 48 hours off, gave me the opportunity to dabble in the health and wellness industry on my days off. To supplement my income, I worked for Cenegenics, a pioneer in the preventative medicine space, and met the man who became my first mentor, Dr. Robert D. Willix, Jr.,  a cardiac surgeon and founding partner of the company as the chief medical officer. A pioneer in Age Management Medicine, focusing primarily on maintaining health rather than just treating disease, he was a cardiac surgeon whose objective was to keep people off his operating table. The patients who benefitted from these preventative services were all affluent, and the glaring disparity between health care equality wasn’t lost on me.

In the firefighter/paramedic role, I would often be helping the same person with the same problem they had called about the week before. We’d tell them what to do to take better care of themselves, and we’d be right back there the next week. I wanted to do more than that. I wanted to provide lasting solutions for these individuals to take care of their health and well-being. From my perspective, I could save far more lives than I could as a firefighter/paramedic by providing preventative health services to the masses rather than the elite few. I’ve always had a knack for finding a need and then developing a plan to meet that need. This led to the founding of my company, Liquivida. Our mission statement was “to help people feel more energetic, youthful, and in control of their health.” Fast forward nine years, and Liquivida is a fast-growing franchise model. As the President and Founder, I have found a voice in the modern wellness industry, appearing in feature articles, on televised health-related segments, entrepreneurial podcasts, and speaking engagements at high-profile industry events. Now, I am a published author of a unique book, “How To Win In Modern Wellness,” that brings together the top leaders in the industry to provide medical professionals and business individuals insight into this growing and evolving health and wellness landscape through the lenses of CEOs, doctors, marketers, and attorneys.

What is something that most people don’t know about you?

I played the violin for about 14 years. I also absolutely love Broadway shows, which I think surprises people because I can’t sit still long enough to watch a half-hour television show. But there’s something special about the theater.

What are your passions outside of your career?

I would say that most of my passions are really part of my career. I truly enjoy fitness and taking the time to work out. I was an avid cook back when I was a firefighter, and though I don’t have the time to put together meals the way I used to, I enjoy eating healthy, and when I do cook, everyone loves it.

Are there any social causes that you believe in and support?

The health and wellness of our first responders is a cause that hits very close to home for me. There has been a lot of research that has come out regarding the high rate of suicide among first responders. Additionally, as a group, statistics show high rates of cardiovascular disease and diabetes among first responders, and it comes from the high-stress lifestyle that they live, particularly while they’re working. Cancer rates are also high.  Sleep deprivation is a major contributing factor to so many illnesses, and first responders suffer greatly from that, as well as having a lot of adrenal fatigue from the adrenaline rushes and waking up at night while at the firehouse or hospital. During COVID-19, my company, Liquivida, provided free and discounted IV Vitamin Drips to our local first responders, and to this day, they receive a first-responder discount on our services.

What is next for you?

The next step for me is to continue to grow the Liquivida franchise on a national level to really help as many people as possible with their health, wellness, and aesthetic needs.

My future ambition is to potentially get involved in local politics, helping to enhance my community and helping to make changes on a government level that impact business and the wellness industry.

How To Win In Modern Wellness

Tell me about your book.

When I entered the modern wellness industry,  I made the decision not to go the cut-throat route when it came to my competition. Rather I set out to build strong relationships with these other business owners in the industry, many of whom are some of the true leaders in this wellness industry. Ten years later, after really cultivating a lot of these relationships, I again recognized that there was a need. We needed more people to get into this industry. I deal with medical professionals who are tired of sick care, frustrated with insurance companies, and spending barely 10 minutes with a patient. I speak to a lot of aspiring entrepreneurs who have a passion for health and wellness. It occurred to me that they all needed two things. Number one is to be motivated. And number two, to have some direction on how they can make things happen on their end. So, this book “How To Win In Modern Wellness” was created as a sort of guide for them, and to make it a true resource, I decided to ask these leaders in the industry to talk about some of the things they’re doing, their successes, their failures, insights, and lessons learned. In the end, the book is to help our industry grow – whether through creating more franchises or creating even more competition for ourselves!
