Ioish, pronounced eye-o-ish, is a project led by the main man and guitarist Vaibhav Bhutani. And to give his listeners a preview of his upcoming album, he released “What You Need It For” in September.
The track begins with a serene introduction with soft marimba-like tones that sound like an idle spaceship floating through the void of space. A few faster tones fly by here and there, creating a cozy atmosphere. The introduction lasts over a minute and eases listeners into the progressive sound.
After the cloudy introduction, drums crackle to life, and a guitar riff begins slamming the same notes that flew by fleetingly before. A strum and some soft brass elements further build the atmosphere. By this point, the track starts sounding more like an epic RPG soundtrack, with descending brass runs, and awesome electric guitar riffs.
After about two minutes of complex progressive rock riffs, the drums and riffs build up speed and volume, reaching a peak. At this point, they give way to a triumphant mountaintop vibe. It’s as if the peak of Mount Everest has been reached. Then, some softer yet still epic guitar licks lead us into the last portion of the song. Some lower-pitched guitar chugs begin this section, ending with a very impressive ‘Guitar Hero’ outro after just five minutes of playtime.
The only thing that can be said to describe the song is “Wow.” An entirely instrumental track is certainly not everybody’s cup of tea, but it’s surely many people’s shot of whiskey. As a Pink Floyd fan, the track’s ambiance and atmosphere are welcomed. It has some progressive rock elements but also some alternative rock and metal elements to it as well. Heck, it sort of sounds like something Phil Firetog would write. Nobody can complain about the lyrics as it has none, and it’s a genre-defying track to boot.
“What You Need It For” would make for some fantastic background music for various purposes. You could put it in a playlist you throw on while gaming, or it could be some ambient music while playing a board game or even reading. It could even be a good driving tune if you’re that into instrumentals! While the song itself is a complete trip, the official music video posted on the Ioish website puts visuals to it which offer a full-fledged sober trip. It’s definitely worth a watch or two.
