Ironically, Started a Podcast in My Closet

For a very long time, I had this feeling that none of my creative endeavors reached the goal, and they were always left incomplete halfway through. The book I wanted to write? It joined the other three books I wanted to write, compiling hundreds of pages that have not seen the light of day. So, I wanted to change the pattern and do something that would fulfill itself and me. That is when I began my next adventure: ironically, started a podcast in my closet.

The beginning of a weekly rambling session

At the beginning of 2021, I sat on the floor in my brother T’s living room while we FaceTimed brother M and I told them I wanted to start a podcast. It had to be about something I am incredibly passionate about so I could talk about it for more than one episode. Something that would push me not to give up halfway and actually bring this journey full circle. So, I decided to talk about actresses. If you know me, you know this is my favorite topic.

I had no idea what I would name the podcast, but I wanted it to relate to me. To be something that would allow my personality to shine through and I could be proud of. That is when brother T came up with the best title I could have ever dreamed of: Cats, Milfs & Lesbian Things. Do you see the irony?

Up until that evening, I had no idea how podcasts were made. I had listened to a few of them, but how would I record, edit, and publish my own? No clue. However, after hours of research, I decided Anchor would be my best option. Then, I realized I had everything else I needed: a phone, headphones, and a computer to upload the podcast. Brother T worked on the art, and a few days later, my first episode was live.

Since January, I have led a weekly rambling session that goes live on Wednesdays. Each episode is about a different actress — respectfully called milfs — a lesbian fact, and a little bit about my life. Maybe it is not the healthiest way to do therapy, but it sure is fun and inexpensive.

An open closet

Ironically, the podcast started in my closet. There I was, a lesbian once again sitting in the closet recording episodes for other queer folks. Now, I record weekly in my car — appropriately named after Olivia Benson.

The idea behind the podcast was to create a safe space for other queer individuals who may have felt alone, lost, or unheard. I wanted to talk about topics they could relate to and feel like someone out there understood their struggles and emotions. Create a platform that I searched for when I was young, questioning, and lost. I do not know if this goal has been met, but I hope at least one listener feels safe when pressing play.

Although Cats, Milfs & Lesbian things began in a closet, it was always one with an open door. A few minutes in which people could feel out, proud, and loud because there is no shame in being yourself. I realized that it was okay to be myself a few years ago, then decided to share that voice with anyone willing to listen, so, ironically, started a podcast in my closet.
