Why is this subject, “Breakproof,” important to the world?
Resilience is of paramount importance in our world, as it equips individuals to navigate the myriad of challenges and uncertainties that life throws their way. When climbing mountains, both physical and metaphorical, it is resilience that allows us to overcome immense physical and mental obstacles. In the dynamic realm of entrepreneurship, where setbacks and failures are often a rite of passage, resilience becomes the driving force that propels one forward, turning challenges into lessons and fostering growth. The belief in Big, Hard Goals highlights the significance of resilience not just as a reactive trait but as a proactive pursuit. By embracing resilience, individuals, communities, and societies at large can evolve, adapt, and thrive amidst adversity, making it an essential virtue in today’s ever-changing world.
What is the pressing issue right now, and how are you addressing it?
Resilience, a quality once deeply revered and cultivated, is now under siege in our contemporary society due to a multitude of factors. One significant issue is the pervasive culture of instant gratification, brought about by technological advancements, which often undermines the patience and tenacity required to navigate long-term challenges. This immediacy in many aspects of modern life, from quick online answers to on-demand entertainment, might erode the ability to endure prolonged hardships and setbacks, ultimately impacting one’s resilience. Moreover, despite growing awareness, mental health stigmas persist. Many people still face societal pressures to quickly “move on” or “stay strong,” which can stifle open discussions about genuine struggles, inadvertently suppressing the growth of resilient mindsets.
Additionally, while technology offers immense benefits, an overreliance on it can diminish our innate resilience, leaving individuals feeling lost or overly stressed when faced with tech disruptions. On the other hand, the rise of digital communication has paradoxically led to increased feelings of social isolation. Although we’re more connected than ever, meaningful human interactions, which play a crucial role in building and sustaining resilience, are dwindling. The lack of such supportive networks, combined with other societal challenges like economic disparities and global crises, can make the journey towards resilience daunting for many. It’s evident that, as a society, fostering genuine resilience requires a holistic approach, addressing both internal and external challenges.
Jenn Drummond Biography
What is your background in the subject?
Resilience is a cornerstone of my life’s journey. Being a mother of seven, every day brings its unique challenges, requiring adaptability, patience, and tenacity. My mountaineering adventures, which culminated in setting a world record, have exposed me to some of the most strenuous physical and mental conditions imaginable. In the face of adverse weather, altitude challenges, and the sheer physicality of the climb, I’ve had to dig deep and draw upon an innate wellspring of determination and grit. Moreover, as an entrepreneur, I’ve navigated the unpredictable world of business, facing setbacks and failures yet always bouncing back with renewed vigor and insight. My belief in the importance of Big, Hard Goals has shaped my approach to resilience, constantly pushing me to redefine my limits and seek growth even in adversity.
What is something most people don’t know about me?
I am a cat person! I had no clue I was an animal person until a few years ago when my kids convinced me to get a pair of kittens, and I think I love them more than they do!
What are your passions outside of your career?
I love the outdoors and any cause that gets people out in nature. I also love Chai tea; when I travel, it is one of my favorite things to do: find the best chai tea latte made in the town I am visiting.
Are there any social causes that you believe in and support?
I love contributing to causes that advocate for women all over the world. Organizations that make the outdoors accessible for all, as well as those that help empower underprivileged individuals.
What is next for you?
I am taking three of my boys and one of their friends to Africa to go climb in February. We will combine climbing Kilimanjaro with a service project. I love sharing my love of the mountains with others and talking through the leadership principles one would use to survive a climb into everyday life.
