In a world where leadership is often associated with titles and accolades, Donovan Burgmaier stands out by leading through action, compassion, and community involvement. A native of Sherwood Park, Alberta, Donovan’s journey has been shaped by his roles as an athlete, coach, student, and mentor. But perhaps his most lasting impact comes from his tireless work empowering those around him—especially the youth and marginalized members of his community.

Donovan Burgmaier’s path is rooted in lived experience. From his formative years at Salisbury Composite High School to becoming a student-athlete at the University of Alberta, his focus has never wavered: serve others, build bridges, and lead by example. While pursuing a dual degree in Native Studies and Secondary Education, Donovan continues to align his personal and academic pursuits with his passion for social justice and cultural awareness.

One of Donovan’s most notable contributions is his involvement in VOICE, a gender-based violence prevention and awareness initiative. As a VOICE Ambassador, he has committed himself to advocating for survivors, fostering safe spaces, and encouraging dialogue about consent, respect, and accountability. His advocacy isn’t performative—it stems from a deep desire to make a tangible difference. Donovan believes that strong communities are built through honest conversations, inclusivity, and support systems that protect the vulnerable.

His commitment to community doesn’t stop there. Since 2016, Donovan Burgmaier has volunteered with Santa’s Anonymous, helping distribute toys and bring holiday cheer to families in need. He also dedicates time to Kids Kottage, an organization that supports children in crisis. These experiences have strengthened Donovan’s empathy and fueled his commitment to lifting others up, particularly youth who may lack stable role models.

Donovan Burgmaier’s leadership is equally evident in his work on the football field. As a former defensive lineman for the University of Alberta Golden Bears, he knows the power of sports to teach discipline and build confidence. Today, he coaches at the Peak School of Football and serves as a guest coach for programs like the Edmonton Eskimos Amateur Football Camp and the Northern Alberta High School Senior Bowl. These roles allow him to pour into the next generation of athletes, emphasizing not just performance but character, respect, and resilience.

Whether coaching a football drill or mentoring a student, Donovan believes in empowering others to believe in themselves. He treats every interaction as an opportunity to build someone up. This philosophy extends to his future goals. As a prospective educator, he hopes to cultivate classrooms and eventually schools where every student feels seen, heard, and valued. His ultimate dream is to become a principal—a role in which he can foster school-wide change and lead systemic efforts to build safer, more inclusive environments.

What sets Donovan Burgmaier apart is not just his vision, but his willingness to do the hard work. His professional history includes physically demanding roles such as laborer, welder’s helper, and door installer. These jobs taught him the value of grit, responsibility, and communication—skills he now applies in every aspect of his life, from the football field to the classroom.

Looking ahead, Donovan’s ambitions include traveling the world, opening an athletic facility, and continuing to invest in property and community development. But at his core, Donovan remains grounded in service. For him, leadership means showing up, standing up, and speaking up—especially for those who can’t.

In a time when authentic leadership is desperately needed, Donovan Burgmaier is proving that you don’t need a title to lead—you just need purpose, passion, and the courage to lift others as you rise.
