Liza Kindred on Calm Your Anxiety Journal Exclusive Interview

Why is this subject, “Calm Your Anxiety Journal,” important in the world?

There is so much to be anxious about! It’s become cliche to say that we live in unprecedented times, but technology and globalization have truly made it so that we are living in a world that is paced faster than we can reasonably process and react to it.

But just because there is much to be anxious about does not mean that anxiety has to run our lives. We can learn to minimize and even work with our anxious thoughts and impulses. At its core, anxiety is trying to keep us safe, which is a wonderful goal. It’s just that anxiety tends to spin up in really unhelpful ways. By learning to partner with, and yes! – even make friends with– our anxiety, we can move towards more calm in our daily lives.

It’s not as easy as just telling yourself to relax, though, or even as simple as, say, learning to meditate. Anxiety has very real biological components, so having a thoughtful and intentional approach to anxiety matters.

Liza Kindred Biography

What is your background in anxiety?

Like virtually everyone who is alive today, I have anxiety! I am a Buddhist meditation teacher and former tech industry insider who balances a deep respect for the fundamental teachings of Buddhism with the knowledge that we can’t all escape our daily lives for an hour a day (or even for weeks or years at a time). In this hyperactive world of deadlines, competing priorities, and myriad distractions, I offer an alternative path using spiritual meditation and radical self-love.

What is something that most people don’t know about you?

The most important thing that I want people to know is this: we are complete, just not finished. This is a truth that I try to get closer to each and every day.

What I mean by this is that each of us is a whole person –– nothing is missing, no inherent lack within us. Society and capitalism are centered around us feeling like we need to fix ourselves, be better, and constantly improve––but this is a trap. We can’t fix or hate or change ourselves into someone we can love. I believe that spiritual work is about finding and connecting to that existing wholeness.

What are your passions outside of your career?

The two most important things in the world are community and connection. I try to spend as much time as I can connecting to my neighbors and the living world around me. I love spending time in nature and am so lucky to live in beautiful Miami Beach, Florida, where I can get outside almost daily.

Connecting to mother nature and other people–even in tiny ways–can be a powerful antidote to the disconnection and malaise we often feel in our modern lives.

What is next for you?

I am launching a private wellness studio (online and in Miami Beach) in late 2023 exclusively for wellness teachers. HOLY SHIFT STUDIOS is a place for community, connection, and ongoing education for yoga teachers, meditation instructors, and healers of all kinds.
