Tell us about the founder. What is their background?
Onyx is co-founded by Jon and Andrea Allen. They started working in coffee in high school, during the original boom of the third wave coffee scene. As they started getting more curious about roasting and sourcing coffee, they came to start their own coffee brand, Onyx Coffee Lab.
How did they come up with the idea?
At the time, the coffee industry was pretty hush-hush about where coffee comes from. They decided to flip that entire narrative by being totally transparent about who they buy green coffee from, how much they pay for it, how it’s even imported and transported to the roastery in Northwest Arkansas. Today, you can find this information for every single coffee Onyx releases on its website, down to the roasting batch information on every coffee that’s roasted.
How can this transform the world or our day-to-day lives?
This will transform the world of coffee by allowing more coffee consumers to be connected to the agricultural side of coffee, thereby supporting more sustainable and innovative ways of growing coffee in the future. Many of Onyx’s coffee-producing relationships span over 5 years with single cooperatives or coffee producers. Over time, this means that each producer can grow their own practices whether that means more acreage, better shading plants, improved washing/milling/drying facilities, and more.
