RADIUS Innovation
What problem does the product solve?
RADIUS has solved issues by launching biodegradable toothbrushes to eliminate the end-of-life issue that most oral care products have. 99% of products end up in a landfill, so if you design products to biodegrade in a landfill, you are reducing the impact on landfills worldwide. RADIUS’ mission is to design for a reduced carbon footprint, both on the front of life and end of life of all our products.
All our toothbrushes are made from recycled content, reducing the amount of virgin resin and petroleum used in our products. We use sustainable materials such as renewable wood-based resin and upcycled materials such as hemp, wood, coconut shell, recycled dollar bills, wheat starch, and more. We encourage other industry players to join us in this movement of Better Cleaning for a Better World.
How can this transform the world or our day-to-day lives?
By switching to a sustainable toothbrush, each person can help reduce the number of products that hit landfills. In addition, it reduces the waste of fuel and single-use packaging used to sell oral care products and toothbrushes. The longer the toothbrush lasts, the less often one needs to buy a new one and, subsequently, the less waste there will be at the end of its life that would find its way into a landfill.
Kevin Foley Entrepreneur
What is the “Founder story”?
RADIUS was founded in 1983 by my father, Kevin Foley. It is a second-generation family-owned company and now certified women-owned. The original concept of RADIUS’s first product was to evolve the toothbrush from what it had originally been: a stick. The first toothbrush in human history was a neem stick, and even after hundreds of years of human-made toothbrushes, it had not ever truly evolved past the shape of a stick.
RADIUS was founded with innovation at heart and the idea of taking everyday-use products and making them better through design to be more effective, more enjoyable, and more sustainable. At the core of our products is our toothbrush design, specifically made to have circular bristles that massage the gums with a wider head to ensure less pressure is put on just the teeth, which can cause gouging and enamel erosion as well as receding gums by pushing the gum tissue up as one brushes back and forth.
How did you come up with the idea?
There are several issues surrounding toothbrush waste and oral care product waste. The first and foremost issue is that most oral care products are not recyclable. The reason is that the type of plastics that most oral care products are made of are not collected in community recycling streams because most oral care products are made up of more than one type of plastic. Every single toothbrush has bristles that are a different type of plastic than the handle. By design, they prevent recycling because you can’t easily separate out the different plastics.
RADIUS Reviews
What do customers love most about the product? What are they saying?
The customers have expressed that the toothbrushes offer superior cleaning and an enjoyable experience brushing their teeth! Some customers have said, “I’ve used these toothbrushes for over 15 years. Love them!” Another has said, “I’ve been using Radius toothbrushes since the mid-2000s and wouldn’t consider anything else! The ergonomic design ensures a comfortable grip (available for right- and left-handers), and the large bristles-oval covers much more real estate than a standard brush. It makes quick work of brushing the gums above/below your teeth, brushing your tongue and the roof of your mouth. I also love the Radius Organic Clove Cardamom Toothpaste and the Vegan Peppermint Anywhere Floss™. Can’t think of a single reason not to try this product line.”
