Running Program Builds Resilience and Community for Veterans with PTSD

From IDF Veteran to “Running with Rami” Founder, Rami Yulzari

Rami Yulzari is an IDF veteran who courageously served during the First Lebanon War and has since faced the ongoing challenges of living with PTSD. Seeking a path toward healing and personal growth, Rami discovered the transformative power of long-distance running. This journey into running reached a pivotal moment in 2011 when he completed a marathon, experiencing firsthand the profound therapeutic benefits of the sport. Motivated by his own recovery, he established “Running with Rami,” a program aimed at assisting other veterans grappling with PTSD to find comfort and healing through running. The initiative is bolstered by support from the American Friends of NATAL and NATAL itself, an apolitical non-profit recognized internationally for its over 25 years of expertise in mental health, resilience building, and trauma treatment.

His organization promotes physical activity and focuses on building a supportive community. “Running with Rami” provides a space where veterans can come together to share their experiences, challenges, and achievements. Under Rami’s guidance and through shared experiences, the veterans participate in regular running sessions. These sessions are designed to enhance their mental health, develop resilience, and cultivate a sense of camaraderie among participants.

“The first week of the war, I came to the Kfar Gaza community. Everyone was displaced from their homes following the events of October 7, 2024 and they had been temporarily relocated to a hotel,” Rami explains. “I was told by one woman, ‘Don’t be impressed by the fact that it’s a hotel, it’s a 5-star refugee camp.’” He continued, “At the end of my visit it was clear to me that we had to do something for them. Due to the complexity of the situation in the first month of the war, it took time and a lot of patience to understand what would be helpful and how to organize it. Four months ago we founded the running group.  We came with one simple but very significant promise. True to the philosophy of long distance running: ‘We are here to stay, we are with you until you return to your home.’”

Beachside Runs Are Where Serenity Meets Stamina

Each week, the team gathers at the scenic Shafim Beach, leveraging its calm surroundings for holistic training that benefits both the mind and body. Typically consisting of six to eight participants, these sessions maintain an intimate atmosphere, enabling personalized support and attention for each runner. The ocean’s proximity not only adds to the aesthetic pleasure of the workouts but also enhances the therapeutic environment, offering a soothing retreat from everyday stress during each run.

The Backbone of the Running Team is Nurturing Guidance

At the helm of each session is Ronen, the only male member and a trainer well-versed in addressing the needs of trauma victims. His extensive experience is crucial for designing workouts that are not only physically challenging but also attuned to the emotional well-being of the participants. Accompanying Ronen, a clinical social worker is present at every meeting to offer professional therapeutic support. This collaborative, multi-disciplinary framework allows the group to focus on enhancing physical fitness while simultaneously tackling the intricate psychological challenges associated with PTSD. As the group expands, continuous efforts are made to incorporate more members into this supportive and healing environment.
