Tell us about the founder. What is their background?
The Sitka Salmon Shares story begins in 2011, when a Midwestern college professor, Nic Mink, and a second-generation Alaskan fisherman, Marsh Skeele, met in Sitka, Alaska. Nic is an academic and entrepreneur with more than two decades of experience teaching about food systems and natural resource management, as well as working as a manager and executive in the food industry. In both his career in business and academia, he’s especially interested in value creation systems for historically-marginalized producers, community-driven natural resource development, and restorative economies and institutions. Marsh is a second-generation fisherman who grew up fishing in Port Alexander, Alaska, and who now resides in Sitka. At twenty-five years old, he bought the F/V Loon, a converted sailboat, and started the next fishing generation.
How did they come up with the idea?
During Nic’s first trip to Sitka, Marsh taught him about the importance of protecting Alaska’s wild fish populations and the centuries-old communities that rely on Alaska’s fisheries for sustenance and a way of life. Nic returned to the Midwest with boxes of line-caught, wild Alaska salmon. To say the fish was well-received would be an understatement. People raved about the salmon’s taste and quickly made the connection between their consumption and the impact this small act could have on conservation efforts and the health of Alaska’s responsibly managed fisheries. The rest, as they say, is history.
How can this transform the world or our day-to-day lives?
Increasingly, consumers are demanding more from the companies they buy from. They’re not only buying a product, but also an experience. They also expect companies to be driven by purpose and a desire to do good in the world. Sitka Salmon Shares doesn’t just sell high-quality seafood. Our members also have the opportunity to connect with small-boat fishermen in Alaska who fish as a way of life, partake in a one-of-a-kind culinary experience, and are given the tools and confidence in the kitchen to be able to create unforgettable meals and moments with their friends and family.
At Sitka Salmon Shares, we’re deeply committed to bringing a marketplace to small-boat fishermen in Alaska who fish in much the same way their grandparents did. Our member-subscribers are families, healthy eaters, foodies, adventurers, and others who are dedicated to supporting US fishing communities and are committed to making eating sustainably harvested seafood the only option.
What do customers love most about the product?
Hands down what customers love most is the quality of the fish in their monthly boxes, easy, approachable recipes, and the feeling of supporting sustainable fishing practices by multi-generational small-boat fishermen and their families, rather than large corporations But don’t just take our word from it — hear what their customers have to say! “So glad my son-in-law introduced us to Sitka Salmon. We are hooked! If you are considering a membership, don’t hesitate. You won’t regret it.” — Lisa, Sitka Salmon Shares member-subscriber “Consistently good quality fish. I don’t think you can get better quality salmon, cod, or sablefish here than through Sitka. Good sustainable fishing practices. Today I had an opportunity to speak to customer service for the first time in our two years on the program. Someone picked up the phone right away and addressed a concern I had with the shipping service (UPS) on the spot. They went above my expectations. This service/seafood is worth the price.” — Christian, Sitka Salmon Shares member-subscriber
