With spring in full swing, many are gearing up for the annual tradition of spring cleaning. Whether that means cleaning out the closet, washing the windows, or decluttering the garage, there are certain chores Americans just can’t stand.
A new survey of over 1,000 Americans by Lombardo Homes found the most hated chore of all is cleaning the bathroom. That’s followed by washing dishes, doing the laundry, cleaning the refrigerator, and doing yard work. 78% of Americans do their lawn care on their own.
People have mastered the art of procrastination, especially for the chores they despise. More than 4 in 5 people procrastinate doing those chores and 66% make excuses to put them off. So much so, that more than 1 in 3 say they never do a deep clean of their home (yuck)!
Even if they put off certain chores, those tasks still have to get done. But it doesn’t mean people are spending a lot of time doing those chores, 1 in 5 said they spend an hour or less on chores in an average week. Meanwhile, a little more than 1 in 10 said they are putting in an average of five hours or more per week completing those household tasks.
Who does the responsibility fall on to get these chores done? Nearly half of the women surveyed said chores fall under their to-do lists in almost every situation, especially if they have kids. Overall, 45% of women say they end up doing the majority of the chores, compared to just 1 in 4 men. As it turns out, more than 9 in 10 women are also completing DIY projects in their homes. The top rooms women are renovating are their bedrooms, bathrooms, and kitchens.
All of that added housework can cause tension in a relationship. 54% of people said they’ve experienced tension when talking about chore responsibilities with their families or roommates. Most people argue over their roommates or family not doing the chores they’re assigned or not doing them often enough. Think it’s tough getting your kids to do their chores? It gets even tougher if you have adult children living at home! Another study finds 2 in 5 parents with grown children at home still help them out with their laundry!
