Steeped Coffee’s Founder Entrepreneur
What is the “Founder story”? How did you come up with the idea?
Steeped Coffee was born out of a deep passion for the ethics and quality behind specialty coffee. In 2010, seven years before launching Steeped, I created a minimum viable product (MVP) of Steeped Coffee after attempting to solve the problem of how to have good coffee at the in-laws’ over Thanksgiving without bringing a whole suitcase of clunky equipment. I believe that making great coffee shouldn’t be so difficult, and convenience shouldn’t come at such an environmental cost.
A few years later, I journaled the entire Steeped Coffee business plan during a flight to visit my grandparents in between projects, and it was all just sitting there waiting to come to life. I really wrestled with the decision to start a coffee company. I asked myself if I could really use coffee to make a difference in the world. It literally took answered prayer, which inspired me to begin the Steeped story. We would be a business on a mission to redeem the waste of single-serve coffee, to highlight ethical sourcing, to enable specialty coffee companies to be more accessible for consumers, to be a light on a hill to promote Business Without Compromise, to model business for good, and to see what journey it would all take us on. It has been a crazy ride so far.
How can this transform the world?
The climate crisis is one of the greatest foundational challenges we face as a society, and pods are a major environmental violator. From 2009 — the present, enough pods have been used to wrap around the planet over 175 times. Those pods are now mostly in landfills — not to mention the millions of machines used and discarded.
It is leading the sustainable single-serve coffee revolution to stop the world’s dependency on non-recyclable, single-serve coffee pods by offering the first fully sustainable single-serve brewing method. The entire Steeped Brewing Method is certified compostable and is made from plant-based renewable materials, ensuring that our sacred coffee rituals go unnoticed by the next generation.
To fully address the single-serve industry’s environmental toll and increase consumers’ adoption, we decided to be more than a coffee brand but also a proprietary brewing method supporting hundreds of roasters. We license our patent-pending Steeped Brewing Method to over 400 of the nation’s top roasters, including names like La Colombe, Counter Culture, Mr. Espresso, and BLK & Bold. These partnerships and our own Steeped Coffee are a key part of our mission to reimagine the single-serve coffee industry.
