Survey Finds Americans Traveling More, Spending Less in 2023

It’s 2023 and America has traveled on the mind: whether it’s hitting the road for a Great American Road Trip, a European backpacking adventure, or even staying home for a restful staycation, the new year brings new opportunities for travel and leisure. Where are Americans traveling for Spring Break and beyond? A new survey of over 1,000 Americans by IPX1031 found out what’s on America’s itinerary this year.

In 2023 more Americans are looking to travel: 51% of Americans plan on traveling more this year than last, and 30% are planning on traveling internationally. As far as getting from point A to point B, 67% are planning road trips, with the majority planning out-of-state travel. 57% are flying, and 40% are taking staycations and staying close to home. People are choosing not to fly for a variety of reasons, but the top reason is cost– also a factor in people choosing staycations.

In fact, the cost is a major factor in America’s 2023 travel plans: while a majority of Americans are planning on 2-3 trips this year, 76% are setting aside less than $4,000 for their travel budget. Nearly 3 in 5 say the current economy is impacting their travel plans – including the 1 in 10 who have already postponed or canceled a trip due to cost. Over 4 in 5 are planning on budgeting more closely, and 43% are planning on using reward points to help defray costs. This might be one reason why working vacations are on the rise: a recent report found nearly 1 in 3 plan to work remotely while traveling in 2023. With the ever-increasing popularity of remote work, why not take that Zoom poolside?

Spring Break is just around the corner: where are Americans going for fun in the sun? The #1 destination for Spring Break 2023 is the sunshine state itself: Florida. With nearly 1 in 5 Americans planning a Spring Break trip, Florida hotels are sure to be happy- half of the spring breakers surveyed said they would be staying at a hotel, as opposed to just over 1 in 5 choosing a vacation rental or AirBnB.

This reflects a larger trend: 70% of Americans polled on travel plans said they planned to stay at hotels as opposed to vacation rentals. Rental property owners can have consolation in the other 30% who plan to use vacation rentals. The most popular rentals are lake houses and beach houses, followed by cabins: people are looking to get away!  With over 9 in 10 Americans planning on 2023 travel, it makes sense that nearly 1 in 3 vacation homeowners are renting theirs out – and of those who don’t, 15% are planning on doing so this year.

Who are Americans traveling with? 56% of Americans planning on traveling with family- taking a trip together is one of the top ways families have quality time. More than half (55%) are planning on traveling with their partners, while just under 1 in 3 are booking a trip with friends. Coworkers are on the itinerary too: 1 in 5 are planning on business trips this year.
