Mention the word motorcycle, and it’s easy to envision the carefree two-wheeling world of speed and steel meshed together to create a powerful, dynamic experience on the road – a symbol of the ultimate freedom. Yet, with the current energy crisis and the march towards a net-zero carbon footprint by 2030, people are starting to rethink how an easy-rider can be easy on both the environment and pocketbook. And that’s where UK modelmaker Evie Bee comes into play. She turned her obsession with scramblers and her woodworking skills into a vision, unlike anything we have seen today: an electric scrambler bike made from wood.
And not just any wood: called The ElectraPly, this environmentally friendly e-bike is made from sustainable plywood. Evie Bee, who specializes in traditional woodworking, took her inspiration from the iconic Yamaha SR250, a scrambler (a lightweight bike specially designed for off-road motorcycling), when creating her modern rendition.
She wanted to construct a version as close to the look of the Yamaha as possible while being mindful of the environment. With raw materials sourced from Garnica, a leader in sustainable plywood made from European farm-grown polar trees, The ElectraPly was created.
Garnica’s poplar plywood is an ideal choice for any transportation designs and builds as it is both cost-effective and lightweight with superior strength. And it’s treated to deal with whatever Mother Nature throws at it, from challenging weather conditions to water and insects. To build The ElectraPly, Evie used Garnica’s Duraply line of sustainable plywood, binding multiple layers together, and added steel where necessary for additional strength.
Affectionately known as ‘Evie’s EV’, The ElectraPly is powered by a 36-volt 12.5-ah battery made by YOSE, which itself resembles a gas tank, completing that custom café-racer look, an integral part of any scrambler’s DNA. Yeah…it’s a badass look without being bad to the environment. With a top speed of 28 miles per hour and a maximum range of 22 miles per charge, this e-bike is both substance and style, able to take on an off-road trek in the mud or even just a leisurely drive along a paved road.

And here’s the fun part: it’s available in a limited quantity, as each bike is handmade by Evie herself. Currently, Evie is crowdfunding to bring her wooden e-bike into full production, but a brochure can be downloaded for step-by-step instructions to build your own personalized ElectraPly.
