Born and raised in a small town in Massachusetts, designer Kay’la Sanders, a fashion designer, focused on making a brand where individuals would embrace their true and authentic selves. Her love for weddings and designing quickly became a dream she couldn’t abandon. So, she pursued her dreams and officially launched Mrs. Kay’s in May 2018. Mrs. Kay’s has become a brand that’s worth watching, from intricate and extravagant ball gowns to sleek velvet blazers.
Their recent collection focused on empowering the person to celebrate the “Skin I’m In” by featuring prints with bold colors, cutouts to show some skin, and overall uniqueness.
What inspired you to create this collection?
This collection is a reflection of who I am and the self-love journey that I have been on. It reflects unique pieces and reconstructs our idea of beauty. I would describe this collection as “otherness” – it challenges and refines beauty specifically for women of color in fashion form.
What can the audience expect to see this December?
The audience can expect to see intricate designs, layering of fabrics, and cutouts of patterns in asymmetry. Each design is unique and focuses on the beauty of a woman. Simply put, simplicity meets disruption.
Describe the Mrs. Kay woman?
Mrs. Kay’s woman is attuned to her true self and knows her flaws, making her the epitome of who she is. She makes whatever she touches or wears come to life and embodies HER. As Beyonce said, “It’s not the diamonds, it’s not the pearls…it’s just that I’m that girl.”
When did you launch Mrs. Kay and why?
I began my love for designing wedding dresses early on throughout my high school year, and it continued throughout my corporate career as an Accountant, which led me to be an Accountant by Day and Wedding Slayer by Night. My love for weddings and planning quickly became a dream I couldn’t let go of. So I pursued and led me to follow my dreams of officially launching Mrs. Kays in May 2018.

I’m inspired by designers such as Ann Lowe – “society’s best-kept secret” for her intricate, opulent designs, especially her 3d roses. Also, I’m inspired by Vera Wang for her classic, simplistic, clean-cut designs.
