As the 2024 United States presidential election approaches, the political landscape is more polarised than ever. With just a few months remaining before Election Day, candidates from across the different political parties attempt to position themselves as the answer to the nation’s most pressing challenges.
The odds are currently fluctuating as to who is most likely to be in office come January, however, the race for presidency has taken a different complexion since current president Joe Biden announced he will not be running again earlier this summer.
It leaves many questioning who the current candidates for the election are. In this article, we run through a closer look at the candidates vying for the presidency later this year.
Donald Trump – Republican
Donald Trump, the former President, is once again the Republican nominee, seeking to return to the White House after his 2020 defeat to Biden. The current favorite to return to office, Trump’s campaign is built around his signature “Make America Great Again” slogan, with promises to continue the populist and nationalist policies that defined his first term.
Odds on Donald Trump To Win The 2024 US Presidential Election are at 15/13 at the time of writing, with the attempted assassination of the 78-year-old one of the major talking points defining his run for office so far, with strong performances for Electoral Votes in states like Florida, Texas, and Ohio.
Kamala Harris – Democrat
Kamala Harris, the current Vice President, is leading the charge for the Democratic Party in the 2024 presidential election following Biden’s decision to step down.
Her platform focuses on social justice, healthcare reform, and climate change, with an emphasis on expanding access to affordable healthcare, protecting voting rights, and addressing systemic racial inequalities.
Harris rose from district attorney in San Francisco to the vice presidency in a decade and aims to be the first female president in the history of the United States.
Robert Kennedy Jr. – Third Party
Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a member of the storied Kennedy political family, is running as a third-party candidate in the 2024 election.
The son of Robert F. Kennedy and nephew of President John F. Kennedy, he is an environmental lawyer and author who aims to lead the way toward national reconciliation. However, remains an outsider to be president when it comes to political betting.
As a third-party candidate, Kennedy faced significant challenges in winning states outright in the 2024 election due to the entrenched two-party system in the United States.
However, his appeal as an outsider and his focus on issues like government overreach, environmentalism, and public health might resonate in certain regions, including Vermont, Maine, and Oregon, as well as swing states that have large numbers of independent and moderate voters.
Tim Walz – Democrat
Another candidate who is a long shot in the race is 150/1 Tim Walz. Harris announced that Walz would be her running mate at a rally in Philadelphia just hours after securing the Democratic nomination.
The 60-year-old Midwestern governor, military veteran, and union supporter brings a wealth of legislative and executive experience to the race.
The decision also allows Harris to leverage her campaign’s position in the Upper Midwest region, a crucial battleground in the upcoming election.
Walz possesses the experience to become an alternative to the current Vice President, serving as a more palatable choice for a broad spectrum of representatives, especially if neither Trump nor the Democratic nominee can secure a majority.
