You might hear a teen ask what a DVD is, and your world comes crashing down. Digital media now brings everything to us through streaming apps, and more digital content than ever is being consumed literally right under everyone’s noses.
While you may shudder at the thought of someone thinking that a disk drive is a poorly designed cup holder, you might also wonder if a cassette tape or CD has any value anymore. The answer is yes, they do, and this piece is here to show you why.
You Own Your Own Physical Copy
The media world was shaken only very recently, when PlayStation announced that Discovery content was to remove its content by the end of 2023, leaving many consumers out of pocket and without the media they’d purchased.
When purchases are essentially left with the company you buy them from, you can’t really do anything to stop them from retaining them. However, thankfully, due to the sheer backlash from consumers, PlayStation signed an updated license agreement to keep the content where it belongs, for the use of the consumer.
This is just one example where digital copies of media, especially ones that have been purchased and used through specific apps can be withdrawn, so buyers no longer have what they paid for.
Systems Can Be Made Obsolete Through Digital-Only Media
Any avid gamer will know how worrying it can be to download a digital copy of a game for an older model of console and wonder when they’ll be forced to stop using it. Not only will the “not true ownership” issue come into play, but if you rely on online stores and support for gaming and they’re shut down, it’s safe to assume it won’t be long until you won’t be able to access anything (even if your console is fine.)
Physical Media is Essential for Sound and Picture Quality
Music or movie fanatics may have already clocked that when streaming or using media sent over the internet, the quality just isn’t going to be as good as using a physical copy. The compression that happens can significantly alter the sound or picture, giving you a less-than-the-best experience.
If you have some media that you would like to own a physical copy of, CDs are an excellent and cost-effective way to do it. Take a look at cd pressing, whether you’re recording an album or have just have some videos that you want to archive. CD players are still common place, and evidence suggests they will more than likely be making a comeback.

Aiding The Preservation of Artistic Work
It can be so easy to lose digital copies of any form of artist work, whether this is music, movies, books, or art. One of the best ways to prevent this from happening is to have a physical copy of them (or a few). By all means, make backups in the digital world, but it can be wise to have versions that you can hold in your hand.
