ISLAMABAD: Caretaker Prime Minister Anwarul Haq Kakar has removed Texas based Pakistani-American businessman Muhammad Tahir from the post of Special Assistant to Prime Minister (SAPM).

As per a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office, the appointment of SAPM Mohammad Tahir Javed has been rescinded. The initial notification appointing Tahir Javed as the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister for Investment was issued on October 6, but it has been revoked following lobbying efforts by a group of American Pakistanis, as per insider sources.

Sources from the PM House have revealed that Prime Minister Kakar took this action after reports in both US and Pakistani media uncovered Tahir Javed’s previous conviction for theft, which he failed to disclose. Additionally, it was reported that Tahir Javed, a staunch supporter of Imran Khan, had financially supported him before turning against him.

With the Prime Minister’s approval, the Establishment Division in Islamabad has officially withdrawn the appointment notification for Tahir Javed as Special Assistant.

Shortly after his appointment, it was observed that Pakistani-American businessman Muhammad Tahir Javed was granted privileges similar to those of a state minister, despite his prior financial contributions and campaigning for Imran Khan and the PTI in the United States during Khan’s premiership.

Tahir Javed, aged 57, relocated to the US from Toba Tek Singh in Pakistan with just $500 and gradually built a successful business empire. He reportedly undertook various jobs, including repair work and senatorial duties, in the United States.

According to Texas court records, Tahir Javed received a five-year deferred probation sentence starting in January 1992 for felony theft dating back to September 1990. He served only half of this term, even though felony theft sentences typically start at a minimum of one year. After completing his sentence in 1994, Tahir Javed focused on business, eventually establishing several successful companies with his brother’s assistance.

According to records from the Texas Jefferson County’s District Criminal Court, Tahir Javed’s felony theft case was identified as Cause: 56447, with an offense date of September 25, 1990, in Beaumont, TX. The filing date was November 5, 1990, and the offense description was “theft by receiving.” His probation duration was set at five years, and it was completed on March 28, 1994.

In July 2017, Javed received a warning from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding his business, Royal Smoke LLC, an online seller of tobacco and tobacco-related products. The warning was issued because the FDA determined that Royal Smoke products were misbranded and sold to individuals under 18 years of age. The FDA’s letter to Javed also cautioned against non-compliant labeling and advertising, indicating that non-compliance could result in criminal prosecution.

Tahir Javed identifies himself as a Pakistani-American entrepreneur, investor, business magnate, and philanthropist on his social media profiles.

Despite campaigning for Imran Khan and the PTI while the party was in power, Tahir Javed has become a vocal critic of Imran Khan in recent months. He described Khan as a failed Prime Minister whose only claim to fame is his status as a celebrity cricketer. In a recent interview, Javed expressed his disappointment with Khan, claiming that his visit to the US in November 2019 yielded no tangible benefits for Pakistan due to Khan’s lack of substance, plan, and vision.

However, during Khan’s tenure, Tahir Javed publicly praised his “successful” US visit and contributions, with Khan acknowledging Javed’s instrumental role in establishing the Pakistan Congress Foundation and reviving the Congressional Pakistan Caucus at the 116th Congress. Tahir Javed boasted of arranging meetings between Imran Khan and over 63 US Senators during Khan’s visit, a claim disputed by PTI, which asserted that Javed managed only three Senators, with the rest being arranged by the Embassy and the government. Haiti hopes one day to have free and fair elections, but at the moment, it is not safe enough to do so. The State Department is weighing in and various groups of leaders from around the world are discussing how they can help make this happen, but no one sees a way through the violence with dramatic intervention. 

Different solutions have been suggested, but nothing has worked yet. The Canadian government recently provided military transport equipment to Haiti in hopes of helping the police force, but the gangs just attacked and stole the vehicles for themselves. 

Politically, sending material items is the easy thing to do, but it is singularly ineffective in Haiti. What is required is boots on the ground – people the gang members would fear.   Even with such, it will take many years – as much as a decade – for civilian life to return to normal. So it’s going to require a long-term commitment as well as a large personnel commitment, neither of which is politically popular. 

Attempts have been made to freeze assets and defund Haiti’s previous corrupt leadership, but that is also a long-term solution. They hid the money they stole long ago in secret accounts in other countries – there’s no way to track it. Similarly, those in charge of the gangs now won’t suffer from any lack of funds, as they’ll continue to make more money through drugs and kidnappings. 

A short-term solution is what is needed because people are dying in the short term. Every minute that politicians continue to engage in talk without action, another child starves to death.  This is an acute problem requiring granular solutions, rather than theoretical discussions in ivory towers. Until an overwhelming military force – personnel outnumbering the gang members – is sent to Haiti, the gangs will continue to steal everything that is sent in aid to use to their own advantage, further compounding the problem.

In addition to offering no hope for elections and a new government, the violence prevents vulnerable populations such as pregnant women, children, and the elderly from accessing adequate nutrition and healthcare. In a country with already extremely high maternal and child mortality rates, this assault on Haitian human rights is unconscionable. The precarity of human life in Haiti drives many to leave, often by dangerous means.  

Fuel shortages, compounded by gang control of the central fuel depots, have contributed to a scarcity of clean water, which has caused the present cholera crisis. Many are sick and will die because of the lack of Haitian governmental infrastructure. The lack of fuel further destabilizes the fragile Haitian economy, which is in danger of complete collapse.  

The spreading gang violence in Haiti undermines the stability of neighboring Caribbean countries. Violence along the border with the Dominican Republic is escalating and threatens to spill over the border. Other island neighbors are already overwhelmed with Haitian refugees fleeing the violence and are facing increasing economic pressure to sustain the influx.  

Calls for civil discourse and internal Haitian solutions – including new elections – are appropriate only after security is established. Yes, Haitians need to decide for themselves what kind of government they desire and to rebuild leadership from within, but without outside support to ensure protection, this will not be possible. Strengthening the police force is required to reverse the ubiquitous gang-sponsored terror and allow democracy room to grow.

The solutions for Haiti have always been fraught. In this case, first and foremost, the international community must quickly help to establish security to stop the bloodshed and ongoing human rights violations. Only then, after peace has been achieved throughout the country, can Haitian civil society rebuild democratic principles and hold free and fair elections. To realize long-term success, Haitians must themselves control corruption and build critical infrastructure so their economy and population will thrive.  But until people are free to leave their homes without being kidnapped or killed, we can’t expect to see any of that happen.

As families gather for the holiday season, many people hope that one particular subject won’t come up at the dinner table: politics. The truth is, it’s a hot topic. Popular podcasters like Logan Paul and Alex Cooper can’t avoid the subject. Some podcasters, of course, thrive on politics—and the heated debate surrounding it. 

Whether or not a podcast talks about politics, politics apparently influence how podcasters talk. Preply analyzed transcripts from some of the most popular personality-based podcasts in America to identify their language to draw in listeners. As it turns out, liberal and conservative podcast hosts tend to use distinctly different groups of words. Below are some of our key findings.

Top Words Used by Liberal vs. Conservative Hosts

With the divisive state of American politics these days, it sometimes seems that the two sides speak two different languages. Our analysis of the most popular words used by podcasters suggests that this is true in some ways. 

In fact, not a single word on the liberal top 5 most-used lists appears on the conservative top 5 list. Only two words appear on the top 10 lists on both sides: “states” and “world.” The overwhelming majority of words—like “beautiful” (liberals) and “fact” (conservatives)—appear on one list but not the other.

Conservative Hosts Use More “Political” Language

More than any other word in the English language, conservative podcast hosts use the word “states.” “Money” follows closely behind, and “president” comes in third. “Inflation” and “government” also make the top 10. While “states” shows up in position number 7 for liberal hosts, most other (potentially) political words don’t even crack the top 15. 

One interesting aside: both liberals and conservatives often use words that refer to people, but they make different word choices to do so. “Dude” makes fourth place for conservatives, and “folks” comes in sixth. For liberals, “man” is the sixth most popular word. 

Conservative Hosts Also Use More Patriotic Words

Patriotic words like “America,” “American,” and “United” (presumably at least sometimes together with “States”) appear among the top 15 most-used words for conservative podcasters. While these may seem like general rather than patriotic/political words, none of these words showed up in the top 15 most used by liberal hosts. 

Liberal Hosts Talk More About “Kids” and “Family”

Liberal podcast hosts use the word “family” more than any other, fairly significantly. The related word “kids” came in third place for liberal podcasters, while neither appeared on the conservative list. 

Rounding out the top 5 words for liberals was “crazy,” “funny,” and “sorry.” Why? Your guess is as good as ours, but we can tell you that three of the podcasts we analyzed had the word “sorry” in their top 5. Liberal podcasters also seem partial to the words “guess” and “weird,” as both appeared in their top 10.

The Most-Used Words for Specific Podcasts

We also looked at the top 5 most-used words for specific podcasts. Across the board, the most common word was “states.” Four podcasts had the word in their individual top 5 and made the top 10 for both conservative and liberal hosts. Four popular podcasts also had “president” in their top 5, and the word took the fifth spot overall.

Practical Innovation in Government is the largest study of government performance in almost three decades. Its major finding is that the highest public-sector performers—whether standalone units, large departments, or entire cities or states—all drive improvement from the front lines. In contrast, in the business world, improvement is typically driven by management. Although our study found plenty of examples of management-driven continuous improvement programs in government, they were invariably the low performers.

If you’re a government manager who wants to improve your team’s performance, this article will explain two key findings: 1) Why management-driven improvement doesn’t work well in government, and 2) Why front-line–driven improvement is so powerful and perfectly suited to improving government operations. Whether you run a small unit or manage workers statewide, you need to anchor your efforts in front-line–driven change.

Why Top-Down Government Improvements Are Challenging

It seems obvious that top and middle managers need to drive the most improvements. After all, they’re the ones with authority and resources. In business, if top or middle managers want to make a change, they usually have the power to do so. But the government isn’t a business, and management-driven change is much more challenging in a government setting. Here are three reasons why:

Reason 1: Bureaucratic Hurdles.

When government managers want to create change, they typically face many political, regulatory, and bureaucratic hurdles that can make the process painfully slow, incredibly time-consuming, and even professionally risky.

Public-sector managers also deal with diverse stakeholders and many checks and balances. Some of these checks and balances are in the form of divided authority, but most are embedded in policies and rules that were put in place to ensure consistency, fairness, openness, due process, or ethical behavior. The result is that managers who try to make even modest improvements must contend with a bureaucratic haze of uncertainty, where it’s not always clear what’s allowed.

All in all, this makes it far more complex and challenging for managers to make significant changes.

Reason 2: Budgeting Pitfalls.

Many management-driven improvements are large enough to have budget implications. In government, the budgeting process for large projects often involves political wrangling, horse-trading, and compromise in a giant zero-sum game where different constituencies with different agendas compete for limited resources. Funding an improvement project usually means not funding something else, which means other people will resist the change.

Reason 3: Leaders Lack On-the-Job Knowledge.

The nature of government leadership is very different than in the private sector. As one city manager in Sweden pointed out to us, “Democratic government is one of the few places where leaders generally know far less about how their organizations work than the people who report to them.”

When managers propose an improvement that needs top-level support, they often find themselves trying to make the case to leaders who lack the background and understanding to make an informed decision. And on the flip side, when elected officials start imposing “improvements” themselves, they are often disruptive and don’t lead to improvements at all.

One Canadian school superintendent told us that every time a new provincial education minister takes office, the central ministry sends out a new group of educational “experts” to push the latest teaching “innovations” in her schools. Since these outsiders have little understanding of local realities, their “improvements” almost always create more problems than they solve.

Why Front-Line–Driven Improvements Are Incredibly Successful

Even though management-driven improvements are difficult in government, the picture is very different for front-line–driven improvements. These improvements are generally small and inexpensive to implement. As such, they fly under the radar of customers, colleagues from other departments, and higher-level managers, so they encounter little to no resistance.

To understand this point, let’s look at a front-line idea from one of the high performers in our study: Denver’s Department of Excise and Licensing.

A computer and printer had been set up in a department lobby so that applicants who needed to submit criminal background checks could conduct and print these checks themselves. The problem? The specialized computer software wasn’t user-friendly, so customers constantly got stuck and had to ask a licensing technician for help. On average, this happened 36 times a day, with each incident taking about five minutes of a service technician’s time.

The improvement idea, developed by several technicians, was to create a simplified instruction manual with screenshots and arrows to walk applicants through the process step by step. It eliminated the confusion, saving three hours in technician time per day—a total of 788 labor hours per year!

This was only one idea in an ongoing stream of improvement ideas implemented by 39 staff members that radically transformed the department’s performance.

Because ideas like these are small and fly under the larger organization’s radar screen, they’re effectively invisible to people outside the department. Even if an outsider does become aware of one of the ideas, why would he or she object to it? And because many front-line ideas are about how the work is done, these ideas are often used repeatedly, sometimes hundreds or thousands of times, like the instruction manual improvement described above. So, while front-line ideas are easy and inexpensive to implement, collectively, they’re an amazingly powerful source of improvement.

To supercharge performance, the front line is where government managers should start.

America’s Out-of-Control Society and a Divided Church

Politics in the United States is currently out of control, and the divisions in society are more pronounced, with the Republican and Democratic parties in a constant state of anxiety. The American public is now partisan in its thinking and clearly divided along party lines. This irreconcilable possibility is exacerbated. The fundamental source of the American people’s suffering is the infighting at the top of the American hierarchy, with both parties pulling against each other over gun, race, abortion, and LGBT human rights, among others. Excessive liberalism and extreme conservatism are fighting to the death. This chaotic social situation in American society has even affected religion, and there is no middle ground to reconcile such a bad social phenomenon. This has created a lot of instability in the American Catholic Church, which is as divided in faith and politics as American society is.

The current schism is not only among the faithful but also involves a struggle between priests and bishops over the faith.

The most recent example of episcopal schism was the semi-secret meeting held in Chicago on March 25-26, 2022, which highlighted how divisive it was. Because many of the key figures in American Catholicism were not present at that meeting, the events of the conference brought to light the divisions within American Catholicism. It became impossible to ignore the discord between Pope Francis and the U.S. Catholic leadership.

Religious leaders held hostage by major powers

Since the administration of President Barack Obama, the politically correct ideology that has been brought about has spread to all corners of the United States. More and more civil rights bills and human rights issues of all kinds are springing up, challenging Catholic doctrine and the pope’s divine authority. The Catholic pope has had to face this dilemma of political correctness. He has been forced to make reforms and compromises and is trying to balance the conflicts within American Catholicism over doctrinal issues. He also tried to reconcile doctrinal conflicts with American politics. However, this compromise and reform has provoked a conservative backlash, and we have studied the political and religious views of several archbishops who have unanimously opposed the Pope’s compromise with the American government in the past and have not acted in accordance with the doctrinal principles of the Church. In particular, Joseph Stricklan, bishop of Tyler, Texas, who is considered a conservative among conservatives, is a fundamentalist or extreme leftist in the Catholic Church. He is radical in wanting the pope to remove him from the priesthood as a statement of his faith.

LGBT issues; intensified conflicts

Originally, the LGBT community was limited to the interests of minority groups in individual countries in the West and did not have much impact or move the community to the international level. But after the passage of the LGBT issue in the U.S., the pressure on public opinion grew. The Vatican had to make this difficult choice as public pressure grew and the Catholic faith became confused. Based on this situation, Pope Francis also made a compromise. Although Pope Francis has been more moderate on the LGBT issue than previous Catholic leaders. But he also had relative reservations.

In May 2022, James J. Martin sent three questions to the Pope about the relation of the LGBT community with the Church, The Pope answered the three questions, declaring that God “does not disown any of his children”, advising LGBT people to read the Acts of the Apostles to “find the image of the living Church”, and explaining that some LGBT Catholics suffered not ‘rejection of the church’ itself but instead rejection by ‘people in the church’. He additionally praised the work of Martin.

But apparently, such a response is not acceptable to American conservatives, Thomas Tobin, as we look at his political position statement that while respecting the individual rights of gays and lesbians, it is unacceptable for the church, as a church, to endorse and bless them, and on the basis of this position to raise a solemn objection to the Pope.

While Mike Itkis identifies as a liberal, he doesn’t march in lockstep with the Democratic Party establishment. Instead, he will be listed as an Independent on the ballot for New York’s 12th Congressional District on November 8. 

Itkis seeks to give the voters of the 12th District a genuine alternative to career politicians like his main opponent, Jerry Nadler, who won the Democratic Party’s primary election on August 23. “I’m a liberal with drastically different views,” Itkis said by phone from the city that never sleeps. 

A straight-talker, Itkis isn’t afraid to weigh in on today’s biggest controversies, championing positions that matter to New Yorkers. As such, he advocates for increased cybersecurity, ending the war in Ukraine, and protecting the privacy and sexual rights.

1. Taking a Stand to Protect America 

As a cybersecurity expert for the US military with more than 20 years of experience, Itkis knows Americans’ vulnerabilities online all too well. Now, he wants to the government to do something more about them.

“Congress should establish a Federal Cyber Security Agency to help protect Americans online,” Itkis said. “Foreign actors, even domestic criminals, are working ceaselessly to identify and exploit our weaknesses. Without this kind of agency, Americans are at a greater continual risk of being hacked, phished, or targeted for extortion, as well as having their accounts or identities stolen. Americans’ digital footprints could also be used as launchpads for espionage or crippling malware attacks against their employers, organizations, and even our whole country.” 

According to Itkis, a Federal Cyber Security Agency would create a “secure civilian network” for Americans. Such an agency will be in a good position to educate US citizens on best practices for online behavior and their responsibilities towards others, provide users with a government-issued digital identity and provide a framework for digital privacy rights. These capabilities will significantly mitigate risks in our national computing environment. 

Mindful of recent concerns about Big Data, Itkis specified that the Federal Cyber Security Agency would not be a law enforcement agency, nor would it be operated by any intelligence or military organization. The laws required to establish the agency would establish the principles on how security and privacy are to be balanced. This way, the security measures would not shield criminals nor would they allow law enforcement to directly access users’ information. 

2. Protecting Liberties Abroad 

As casualties mount in Ukraine, and Russia’s invasion hardens into a protracted battle, experts debate whether Ukraine should continue to spill its lifeblood to regain every last inch. 

Itkis’s background provides him with the credibility to weigh in on this controversy. Born in Soviet-era Ukraine, he immigrated to the US as a young boy. In 2009, he joined the US Army, and after Russia invaded Crimea and Donbas, he was a member of a US Army Civil Affairs team sent to train Ukraine’s Reserve Officers at the National Defense University in Kiev.

Itkis calls for the US government to clarify its objectives in Ukraine. While Congress passed H.R. 7691 to send $40.1 billion in the military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine, it did not provide objectives for US foreign policy there. 

“What’s the endgame for us?” Itkis asked. “It’s important for people to understand that the US’s goals aren’t necessarily the same as Ukraine’s. Congress has a responsibility to clearly define our strategy in Ukraine because it is responsible for appropriating funds in the best interests of US citizens.” 

Our current National Security Strategy emphasizes democracy, equality, and human rights. At this point, it’s not clear that it is feasible — or even desirable — to restore Ukraine’s borders to where they were in 2013. It is clear, however, that Putin will be politically defeated if Ukraine manages to have free and fair elections, treats all citizens equally regardless of their “ethnicity” or first language, and provides freedom of speech even to those who hold unpopular views. Itkis thinks that this would be a much better objective than territorial integrity for the United States. 

3. Change policy to reflect today’s America 

Itkis also advocates for change in US domestic policy. “The policies we have now are geared towards traditional family structures, but America is and has been moving away from what’s considered traditional,” Itkis said. 

As of 2021, nuclear families — which are defined as married couples with children — only comprised 18% of American households. Single people account for nearly 50% of the adult population in America, and the rate of unmarried couples and single individuals has been increasing since this data began being collected in 1976. 

“I’m a single adult in New York City,” Itkis pointed out. “It’s time to end discrimination against unmarried people.” 

To do so, Itkis wants to protect the right to privacy, which appears newly threatened following the US Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe V. Wade. He also advocates ditching archaic laws that criminalize sexual relations between consenting adults. 

“An ultra-conservative approach to sexuality seems to drive a lot of policies, both in the military and civilian life,” Itkis said. “As a result, these policies tend to favor married couples over single individuals.” 

In short, Itkis wants to boot the government out of the bedroom.

4. A New Kind of Candidate

His recent work in the military and cyber security required him to keep a low profile. So, why is Itkis now willing to step out of his comfort zone and enter the political fray?

“Looking at the political landscape, I couldn’t find a politician who represented me,” he answered. “I think a lot of New Yorkers feel the same way. It’s my goal to give them someone to vote for.”

Itkis may have a point. New York’s 2022 primary voter turnout rate paints a picture of low enthusiasm, both for Democrats and Republicans. For Democrat’s, this August, voter turnout stood at just 13%, nearly a 50% decrease from the 2018 gubernatorial primary. Add in this year’s complicated redistricting, and it seems New Yorkers may just be fed up. 

The recently-redrawn 12^th Congressional District of New York covers Midtown, Upper East Side, and Upper West Side neighborhoods of Manhattan.
