While Thanksgiving is only just past us, some Americans are already embracing the holiday season in full form. As Lombardo Homes’ 3rd Annual Christmas Decor Report found, 1 in 6 Americans started decorating BEFORE Thanksgiving- while the majority should be decking their halls now, in the week after Thanksgiving.
Most Americans will decorate after Thanksgiving, with nearly half (48%) doing so the week after Thanksgiving. Over 1 in 5 decorate the first week in December, whereas 15% decorate the second week in December.
Which states are decorating the most for Christmas? Vermont comes out on top, with its cozy, wintry vibes embracing the Christmas tree as the most popular decoration. After the Green Mountain state comes to Wyoming, Delaware, Rhode Island, and North Dakota, putting up Santas, window candles (both Delaware and Rhode Island), and a Nativity scene, respectively. States that decorate the least include Oklahoma, Montana, California, Mississippi, and Michigan. New England had a strong showing in terms of decorating the most, with four of the top ten states decorating coming from the far northeast: Vermont (#1), Rhode Island (#4), New Hampshire (#7), and Maine (#9).
As far as the most popular decorations nationwide, Christmas trees come out on top, followed by Christmas lights, mistletoe, gingerbread (houses and/or men), and snowmen. Less popular is the arguable reason for the season- Nativity Scenes are only #10 most popular nationwide.
Now that peak shopping season is upon us, people are scooping up iconic games and the latest home tech to give as presents. But what are they spending on decor alone? This year, Americans are spending an average of $140 on Christmas decorations, which reflects nearly double the amount they spent ($80) last year– though 2 in 3 think they’re spending the same amount.
It’s no surprise that 4 in 5 surveyed are putting up the iconic Christmas tree, the most popular decoration in the country– and just over 2 in 3 prefer an artificial tree to their wooden corollaries. One factor is price- 9 in 10 say that real Christmas trees are more expensive this year. They should make sure that any decor ordered online comes safely- package theft is a huge concern for many Americans.
Which cities are more “bah humbug” than full of cheer? New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Phoenix, and Philadelphia decorate the least for Christmas, while Las Vegas, Baltimore, Denver, Portland, and Seattle top the list of cities decorating the most. In Las Vegas, stockings are the chief decor, whereas Baltimore prefers Christmas lights, and Denver is all about the romance of mistletoe.
When to take all these festive decorations down? Only 5% lose their Christmas cheer on December 26th; 22% do so between Christmas and New Year’s, and a similar amount do so on January 2nd. The majority (51%), however, wait until the first week of January to send their trees to the curb.
Whether you’re staying home or traveling for the holidays, enjoy the cheery decor and festive lights this holiday season!
