I grew up with parents who had multiple tattoos, so this taboo was not taboo at all at home. Something that was poorly viewed or discouraged in other families was completely normal in mine. But as I got older, I realized the negativity that surrounded tattoos. Luckily, it never bothered me or stopped me from getting my own tattoos. There is nothing wrong with adding art to your body. So, if you want to go against those pessimistic eyes, here is what to know before getting your first tattoo.

Be sure in your choice

There are those who believe tattoos do not need to be meaningful for you to get them. Although that is true and everyone is free to do with their bodies what they want, I believe your first tattoo should be something you have thoroughly thought about. This is a piece of art that will be on your body for the rest of your life, so you might want to think about it twice. Considering it is your first one, make sure this tattoo is one you will not regret ten years down the line. Think about it, look at different options, and choose the one that fits you best.

Research artists

Your tattoo artist is essential. They are the ones who will be marking your skin, so you want to make sure they are perfect at their job. Do not go with the first artist you see. Do your research. Look at their social media platforms, their shop’s website, their reviews, and their previous work. You want to make sure they know what they are doing. Choose the one that fits your idea the best and who will do a great job. This should apply to all of your tattoos, not just the first one.

Do not be afraid

Getting a tattoo can be an incredible experience, but you have to make sure you add to it. Do not be afraid to ask questions throughout the process if you are unsure of what is happening or what to do. When the tattoo artist puts the stencil on you, make sure you speak your mind whether you like it or not. Do not hesitate to ask for changes to guarantee you go home satisfied. That is their job, they know what to expect and what to do, so ask as many questions as you need to be happy.

Enjoy the process

Tattoo appointments can take anywhere from 30 minutes to endless hours, depending on the design you are getting. However long it takes, make sure to enjoy the process. Get dressed in comfortable clothes, bring your favorite music if you feel it will keep you relaxed, make sure you eat before and after the appointment, and ask if you can bring a friend or family member to keep you company.

Be mindful of the aftercare

One of the most important things when getting a tattoo is to stick to your aftercare routine. Because it is your first tattoo, make sure to listen to your artist’s instructions and ask questions if you are unsure of what to do. Purchase the products they recommend and do everything they say for as long as they instruct you to. You want to make sure your tattoo heals nicely, and they are the ones who know the most. Once your tattoo has healed, make sure you use sunscreen every day.

For a long time, tattoos were a taboo topic. People viewed individuals with tattoos as lazy or criminals. But the truth is that millions of different people have tattoos for various reasons and with different meanings. Do not be afraid of getting a tattoo, but make sure you are aware of what to know before getting your first tattoo.
